Amara J.

Grade 7

A good photo keeps an ordinary day from slipping away.

Amara sees pictures before she lifts the camera, framing a stack of library books or a puddle's reflection into something worth keeping. On the yearbook team she captures the small moments others overlook, then writes a sentence beside each one so the memory has a voice. Amara fills journals with notes about light and color, and she practices by photographing the same hallway in different weather. She loves how a single image can hold a whole afternoon. Quiet and observant, Amara steps back to let a scene happen naturally before she clicks the shutter. With the morning news studio she edits short photo reels for the broadcast. Classmates say she makes everyone feel comfortable in front of the lens, because she waits for the real smile instead of the posed one.
