Avery M.

Grade 6

I like making something beautiful out of an ordinary afternoon.

Avery keeps a small notebook for the colors of the day, mixing greens and grays until a page feels exactly like the hills after rain. On weekends Avery laces up worn sneakers and follows the wooded trails near campus, stopping to sketch a mossy log or a curious bird before continuing the loop. In the art collective, Avery learned to let a brush stay loose and forgiving, and that a happy accident can become the best part of a painting. Patient and encouraging, Avery shows newer artists how to layer washes without fear. Friends say a walk with Avery turns slow and noticing, full of pointed-out wildflowers and quiet jokes that make the whole group laugh out loud.
