Yara Q.
Grade 8
“The right word found at the right time can carry a whole feeling.”
Yara collects words the way some people collect stones, turning the interesting ones over until they fit into a poem. In the creative writing circle she leads gentle workshops, asking questions that help a shy writer find the heart of a piece. Yara keeps a stack of well-loved library books and starts informal book chats at lunch about the ones she cannot stop thinking about. She believes revision is where writing becomes honest, and she is unafraid to cross out a line she loves. Thoughtful and warm, Yara writes encouraging notes in the margins of friends' drafts. With the yearbook she crafts the opening page each year. Classmates say she listens like the story matters, which somehow makes everyone braver about sharing the words they were nervous to read aloud.
