Description

Art Foundations introduces young artists to the basic elements and principles of visual art through hands-on exploration. Students sketch from observation, mix color, and experiment with line, shape, and texture using simple materials. Each short unit ends with a finished piece that goes home or onto the classroom wall, and students learn to talk about their choices using shared art vocabulary. The class is designed so that beginners and confident makers alike feel comfortable trying new things.

What students learn

  • Identify and use the elements of art: line, shape, color, value, and texture
  • Create observational drawings from simple still-life arrangements
  • Mix primary colors to make secondary colors and a basic value scale
  • Describe artwork using shared vocabulary in friendly group critiques
  • Care for studio tools and clean up a shared workspace responsibly

Signature project

Students assemble a small personal sketchbook of their favorite pieces to share at a classroom gallery walk.
