ART-710

Visual Art I

A semester studio where seventh graders stretch their drawing and design skills across new materials.

Grade 7SemesterElectiveArts pathway

Description

Visual Art I builds on early art experiences with deeper projects in drawing, painting, and design. Students study composition, proportion, and the principles of art, then apply them in works using pencil, paint, and mixed media. They keep a sketchbook of ideas and learn to revise their work based on feedback. The semester ends with each student curating a small portfolio of finished pieces.

What students learn

  • Apply principles of art such as balance, contrast, and emphasis in original work
  • Draw with improved proportion and shading from observation
  • Use painting and mixed-media techniques to complete finished pieces
  • Maintain a sketchbook to develop and refine ideas
  • Give and use constructive feedback in studio critiques
  • Curate a small portfolio that shows growth over the semester

Signature project

Each student curates a small end-of-semester portfolio shown in a hallway exhibit.
