Mathematics 6

Sixth graders build number sense and start reasoning with ratios, fractions, and simple expressions.

Grade 6YearRequired

Description

Mathematics 6 strengthens the foundation students need for middle-school math. Across the year students work with ratios and rates, operations with fractions and decimals, and the basics of the coordinate plane. Hands-on problems and real-world examples help students explain their reasoning, not just find an answer.

What students learn

  • Understand and use ratios, rates, and percents in everyday problems
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals fluently
  • Write and evaluate simple numerical and algebraic expressions
  • Plot points and shapes on the coordinate plane
  • Explain mathematical reasoning clearly in words and symbols

Signature project

Students plan a class event on a set budget, using ratios and decimals to compare options.
