Description

Beginning Strings introduces students to the violin, viola, cello, or string bass with no experience needed. Players learn how to hold the instrument and bow, tune with help, and read music as they work toward simple group pieces. The class moves at a steady, encouraging pace and celebrates small wins along the way. Students perform together at seasonal concerts as a beginning string orchestra.

What students learn

  • Hold a string instrument and bow with correct posture
  • Play open strings and basic finger patterns in tune
  • Read notes and rhythms for the staff in first position
  • Bow with steady tone and follow group bowing markings
  • Perform beginner orchestra pieces at seasonal concerts

Signature project

The class performs its first ensemble piece as a beginning string orchestra at the spring concert.
