Description

Lake Ecology is a semester elective set against the backdrop of the Lake of the Ozarks region. Students study freshwater habitats, water quality, and the plants and animals that share a lake environment. Hands-on labs and case studies help students understand how people and nature can share and protect a watershed.

What students learn

  • Describe the main habitats and food webs of a freshwater lake
  • Measure and interpret simple indicators of water quality
  • Explain how seasons and weather affect a lake ecosystem
  • Identify human activities that help or harm a watershed
  • Communicate findings about a local ecosystem clearly

Signature project

Students create a stewardship guide for a lake habitat, including ways the community can protect it.
